The musical and documentary volumes of the New Schubert Edition are published by Bärenreiter, Kassel, and are obtainable from commercial music dealers. The contents of the volumes appear in the information summarized beneath the heading Status of the Edition.
The music volumes contain a detailed Preface on the genesis, the sources and the context of the works, possibly supplemented by a description of edition-related questions and information on performance practice and reception history as well as on the details of individual versions (stage of composition, revision for a specific performance, revision for the first print aimed at a wider audience). The Sources and Readings following the music section combine the most important data on the sources and particularly relevant comments on corrections and editorial interventions. In the case of vocal works, these references also include sources and readings of the singing text, in some cases also a text edition.
The Critical Reports, which appear separately, offer – in addition to the “Sources and readings” contained in the music volume – detailed descriptions of the sources and additional information on corrections, readings and editorial interventions (see also Project).
The Critical Reports are published separately by the International Schubert Society and can be obtained either via commercial booksellers or directly from the New Schubert Edition’s Editorial Board. The current price list can be found here.
Moreover, each Critical Report is stored in the Archive of German Music History in Kassel and in the following libraries: the Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz (Berlin), Universitätsbibliothek Johann Christian Senckenberg (Frankfurt am Main), The British Library (London), Universitetsbiblioteket (Lund, Sweden), Bibliothèque nationale de France (Paris), Württembergische Landesbibliothek (Stuttgart), National Diet Library (Tokyo), Library of Congress (Washington, DC), Österreichische Nationalbibliothek (Vienna), and Wienbibliothek im Rathaus (Vienna).
Bärenreiter continues to issue many separate editions of Schubert’s works based on the musical text of the New Schubert Edition, marked up for performance purposes.
